چکیده
We report the case of a 66 year-old woman who presented nodular skin lesions on her back and upper extremities. Biopsy revealed amastigotes that were identified as Leishmania infantum-chagasi by PCR. Evaluation also showed hepatomegaly and pulmonary nodules. Treatment with amphotericin B led to complete resolution of skin lesions.

FIRST REPORT OF CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS CAUSED BYLeishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi IN AN URBAN AREA OF RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) is an infectious disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania, and transmitted by sandflies. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, almost all of the cases of American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) are caused by Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, while cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) are caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi. The resur...
متن کاملIdentification of an immunodominant 32-kilodalton membrane protein of Leishmania donovani infantum promastigotes suitable for specific diagnosis of Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis.
Sera from 35 patients suffering from Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis (caused by Leishmania donovani infantum) and 59 patients with various forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis prevalent in the sub-Mediterranean countries (caused by Leishmania major, L. donovani infantum, or Leishmania tropica) were tested by immunoblotting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with both membrane and so...
متن کاملTopical resiquimod protects against visceral infection with Leishmania infantum chagasi in mice.
New prevention and treatment strategies are needed for visceral leishmaniasis, particularly ones that can be deployed simply and inexpensively in areas where leishmaniasis is endemic. Synthetic molecules that activate Toll-like receptor 7 and 8 (TLR7/8) pathways have previously been demonstrated to enhance protection against cutaneous leishmaniasis. We initially sought to determine whether the ...
متن کاملLeishmania chagasi: genotypically similar parasites from Honduras cause both visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in humans.
In the Mediterranean region Leishmania infantum causes both visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis. These two pathologies tend to be caused by distinct parasite zymodemes. We have studied 33 isolates of Leishmania, 2 from sandflies, 5 from visceral cases, and 26 from cutaneous cases in Honduras, to determine if there is a correlation between pathology and parasite type in the New World similar to...
متن کاملGeneration of Luciferase-Expressing Leishmania infantum chagasi and Assessment of Miltefosine Efficacy in Infected Hamsters through Bioimaging
BACKGROUND The only oral drug available for the treatment of leishmaniasis is miltefosine, described and approved for visceral leishmaniasis in India. Miltefosine is under evaluation for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Americas although its efficacy for the treatment of human visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum chagasi has not been described. Drug efficacy for v...
